Ads on bases

Did anyone else see this?

How could they possibly think this is a good idea for baseball? I mean, OK there is some extra revenue coming in, but they make it sound like this is good for baseball, when really, it isn't. When is selling out ever a good thing?

I can only hope that outcry and negtive backlash from this would be significant enough to prevent it from ever occurring again. Sadly, I don't think it'll matter.

7 inch webs for Spiderman 2 will be on all the bases and the pitcher's rubber. This is retarded. Im sorry but I hate sellouts and this is an absolute sell out. Baseball is a game built on integrity and history. That seems to be all going down the tubes now with the steroid controversy and now this.

I just read about this in tomorrows Chicago Tribune and was going to post it. this is the biggest blunder mlb has ever made, in my book.

and they say it's a one time thing. sure, until the next offer to sell out. heck, why not dress the players as characters in the movies? paint the movie logo's on the field, paint the balls, etc.

I suggest all baseball fans completely ignore all mlb games those three days, don't attend and don't watch on tv.

and I'm looking for the general baseball email address on mlb.com's site. i'm letting them know how i feel about this.

Somebody ought to organize a walkout. Nobody should go to a Major League game that weekend. It won't work, but that's what SHOULD happen.

Some capitalist will come along and say that it doesn't effect the flow of the game and makes some extra money, so who's it hurting? Blah blah blah. It effects the game because it effects my enjoyment of the game. "Baseball has no integrity or honesty, so who cares?" I know, but part of the joy is in believing that the GAME ITSELF is sacred, even if it isn't. And if you're going to take away that fantasy, then you're taking away the entertainment value and then me, as a fan...and a consumer. And when there are no consumers you can put signs on everything and it won't make a damn difference.

i found the email addresses to all the mlb teams. i won't post it here because tyson wouldn't be happy, but if you go to mlb's site there is a contact link at the bottom of that page.

email every team and tell them what you think. i've got to think if they get a few hundred thousand emails in the next few weeks they might think twice about this nonsense.

This shows how out of touch they really are. They think we'll pay money to come out to watch their ads on bases. Better yet, they're totally willing to offend their bread and butter, core audience to do this. I don't see how the ads on bases generate excitement about the game, nor do I see how they would help baseball bring a new demographic to the stadium... If you see the ads, it means you're already there... Probably also means that you ran onto the field or are a player.

I agree, something should be done... I'm a little pessimistic about change happening, but I would be willing to do whatever I could to get this message out. A line is being crossed here, and it would behoove us to ensure it never happens again. This is why I destest marketing, ultimately it gets taken too far and it destroys whatever the marketers are trying to hype up. We, the core, die hard fans are being trampled on in order to gain new fans (That speaks of their arrogance. They are counting on faithful fans like us to accept it)... Any businessperson knows that you have to make damn sure you take care of your best customers first, and that they can't be forgotten or pushed aside for new customers. A business that does this ultimately will fail... I can't believe they are so short sighted.

This really does hurt though, because I feel like I've been had. Between the tickets I've bought, jerseys and shirts, hats, and extra innings on TV, I've spent a ton on baseball this year already... And if this keeps up, I'll simply stop spending money on the game... I'll watch on TV or the radio, and stay away from the ballpark if I have to. They'll never take away my love for the game, but I can cut out the discretionary spending on the game... And if others like me do likewise, we can be heard.

Like I said before, negative backlash can go far in preventing this from becoming a regular occurance

bad idea! I dont like commercials on jerseys, and I wouldnt like them in the outfield grass or something, and same thing with bases, but i think that every inch of the walls in the outfield and in foul territory should be plastered with em. I like commercials paying for my ticket, but on bases? that is just silly.

I'm surprised MLB did this at all...

I have to think at this point that MLB public relations office is run by a retarded chimp. EVERYONE had to realize instantly how much people would despise this idea, yet they did it anyway for a quick buck that baseball really didn't need.

It's like MLB thinks that BALCO will eventually ruin the sport and they just want to cash in while they can, ridiculous...

Actually, commercials for BALCO on the bases is a "stroke" of genius... Because since the target audience for the ad is the players, they actually would see the ads.

But this, aside from insulting every baseball fan in the free world, seems to be rather poor advertising... How would someone in the stands see the ad in the first place? Oh, wait, probably with binoculars, because they think we'll show up just to see the ads!!!

the braves responded with my email by sending a generic response. they said it will be passed along to the people who put the games on tv.

Im gonna send some emails out to as many teams as I can. This is ridiculous. It is a bad deal for the people who paid for the ads because almost no one will see them, and it is bad for baseball because now everyone knows that they sold out. I mean how would people react back in the '20s if Babe Ruth was running around a baseball park with ads on the walls, bases, and his jersey? They would be enraged. I believe Bud Selig is a retarded chimp.

I don't care about it. I think it would be dumb for the companies to advertise on the bases because no one can see the advertisements, but so much publicity has been made about the advertisements for Spiderman 2 being on the bases that whoever makes Spiderman has gooten tons of free press so it turned out to be a smart move.

The games affected are going to be June 11-13 (which includes happy's birthday) when Bonds and the Giants are coming to Baltimore, and I want to go to one of those games to see the best player in baseball, I could care less what is on the bases.

Of course the ads will only be seen by TV audiences. Imagine how those games from June 11-13 will be produced--every other inning as the game comes back from commercial, we'll get a semi-overhead shot of the Spiderman base from a camera in the stands with a zoom lens. I wouldn't be surprised if they rigged something up so we could get overhead shots of stolen base attempts.
