Fix the retirement disparity between pitchers and hitters

January 21, 2012 at 08:39PM View BBCode

In system 2 retirements pitchers need only appear in 18 games and pitch 25 innings to stay active, this is ridiculously easy to accomplish and the 25 innings represents only about 1.7% of all innings pitched in a year .

Hitters however must reach 200 at bats. not plate appearances or they are retired . Based on 36 at bats per game, which is higher than MLB has ever experienced, that means a hitter must get over 3.4% of his team's at bats, or double the pitching requirement, to avoid retirement.

I would suggest adjusting both, requiring 20 games and 35 innings, roughly 2%, for pitchers and lower hitters requirements to 150 plate appearances, still more than 2.5% for hitters.

Definitely, yes - especially plate appearances instead of at-bats. This should be idea-scaled immediately.

It's already there as [url=http://simdynasty.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Tweaking-Retirement-System-2/31065-3581]this[/url], but I resubmitted the simpler version above .

Ok, let's go through this and see if there should be a change. I appreciate your ideas on this.

The thought behind 18 Games and 25 IP was to cover RP. SP are governed by the 100 IP limit. So to look at percentages, you need to consider how many of a team's innings are for SP and how many for RP.

In MLB last season, the median team IPs was 1453 and AB was 5538. Looking at some data from a couple of SD leagues, in the WML last season 73.6% of innings were pitched by SP. In the BFL, it was 71.5%. So if we split the difference, let's use 72.5%. So that gives 1053 innings that SP should throw, and 400 IP for RP.

Ok, so requiring a RP to throw 25 innings means he needs to throw 6.25% of his team's RP innings. The SP needs to throw 9.5% of his team's SP innings. And the batter needs only 3.6% of his team's at bats.

But that doesn't account for the fact that there are 3 times as many hitters on a team normally compared to RP or SP (assuming a roster of 15 hitters, 5 SP, 5 RP). So for this study, I think we need to multiply 3.6% times 3 to get to 10.8% to compare apples to apples, right?

So the bar is lowest for RP, then SP, then hitters. Where should the bar be set?

Well I think people would generally be happier to have the bar set lower, so I think we should aim for the RP bar. But at the same time, make sure the RP bar can't be loopholed by SPs. So the first change is that the 18 games should only apply to games out of the pen.

To put batters on an even scale with RP, we should move the bar to 115 at bats. People don't seem to like at bats being used here, so maybe we should adjust this to plate appearances. Using the ratio of AB to PA in MLB last season, this puts this at 128 Plate Appearances. So let's call it 125 plate appearances.

Applying the ratio of 6.25 to 9.5 for SP puts the IP at 65. Since teams typically have 6 or 7 RP to 5 SP, I'd move this to 75 IP.

Does this make sense? The changes would be:
Hitters need 125 PA
Pitchers need
18 games in relief and 25 IP
OR
75 IP

I believe those numbers are perfect. Thanks Tyson.

Does this mean that if a RP has any games at all
as a starter that he is ineligible? For example
25 games, 1 started, 36 IP. Would he qualify ?
Please clarify as RP sometimes make a spot start.

To me 18 games in relief seems pretty straight forward .

25 games with 1 started would be 24 games in relief, which would exceed 18 and keep him playing.

Would love to see these changes!
The most important would be plate appearances.
Valuable spot backups would get a fair shake.
i.e. back up catchers!

I believe this is being put into place on March 13 for the Speed Leagues that use Retirement System 2.
