Often, with these leagues, there is a message board post about the player whose name is borne by the league. I did not see one, and would like to kick off a Kevin Bacon, um, Brown discussion.
James Kevin Brown was born in Milledgeville GA on March 14, 1965. He graduated from Wilkinson High in Irwinton GA, and then attended Georgia Tech, where he was literally a rambling wreck.
I remember a game at the old ballpark in Arlington TX where he gave up 7 runs before he got anyone out. It was 7-0. No one in the entire ballpark liked him any more. And then he proceeded to complete the game, giving up one more hit on the way. They lost, but it kind of typified the way that Brown squandered his skills at that phase of his career.
He won 21 games for Texas in 1992, the only time he reached 20 wins in a season. Why do I remember a popup to 3rd base? Maybe that's the out that clinched his 20th win? Being old, you remember so many things, you can imagine what they mean and be pretty sure you're wrong.
In 1989, he came in 6th in the rookie of the year vote.
In 1992, he was an allstar, and was 6th in the Cy Young vote.
After the 1994 season, he became a free agent, and signed a one-year deal with BALTO. After that season, he signed a 3-year deal with the Marlins.
In 1997, he was really hot with the Marlins, winning 2 games in the NLCS. He proceded to lose 2 in the WS, but it didn't matter, the Marlins were unstoppable.
The Marlins traded him to the Padres, where he was also very good in the playoffs.
A 6-time allstar, his career W-L record was 211-144. with a 3.28 ERA.
He was paid $130 million dollars during his career. That is pretty impressive for the son of a coal miner whose family hoped he was smart enough to avoid the mines.
He was named in the Mitchell Report. In 2003, everybody and his brother in LA was pretty sure that the volcanic temper and the swollen muscles meant he was a disciple of Lyle Alzado.

There was much discussion before we actually got this league approved about the league name, the KBL was a compromise as the other choices weren't allowed.
The first choice was, I believe, the Curt Flood with Andy Messersmith, Dave McNally, Donald Fehr, Marvin Miller and Pete Seitz , only really from bart and I, all receiving support . (Pete Seitz was the arbitrer who declared McNally and Messersmith free agents)
