Yankees acquire Ichiro

July 23, 2012 at 11:21PM View BBCode

Maybe they really are an Evil Empire, not only does New York give the Mariners two marginal prospects, neither is listed among the Yankee's top 20, but they make the poor Mariners pickup $3 million of the remaining $5 million Ichiro makes this year.

Do you see how he's been hitting this season? Seattle should be happy they only paid $3 million to get him off their hands.

the yankees want to find out what they have with brett gardner when it gets old. its a test case.

I just love that the "poor" Yankees made the Mariners dig into their wallet for the $5 million.

As soon as they get back to New York, Jeter will take him out for sushi and show Ichiro how close that right field fence is and explain, through his interpreter, how it's done in the apple.

i don't believe the yankees will have any trouble getting what they want out of him. hit singles, steal some bases, hit some homers down the right field line, provide an awesome glove and arm in the outfield. its a solid get for them.

Plus the Mariners get rid of a potential public relations disaster when Ichiro becomes a free agent in the off season.

Then it is a win-win! And, if he does use his natural power to take advantage of that short porch, it could be a big win for the Yankees.

Hope all those Japanese companies that buy the ads behind home plate in safeco were on a month to month type deal or that's a lot of yen down the crapper

Nice move by yanks. Not that they have much to worry about since the play in the al least.

the AL east isn't good anymore? I haven't been following, but i thought Boston and Tampa were good.

all the teams are obviously terrible. i believe the teams from the AL East lost every single interleague game they played this season. i have to check with the research department.

(but the yankees do obviously have a stranglehold on the division and the playoff spot that goes with it, which is the point. all the other teams are not in their class i guess. because the yankees are..........you know. pretty good.)

as of this morning every team in the division is .500 or better. the only other division that is even in the argument for best in baseball is the AL west with 3 teams at .541 or better. and the mariners.

we would not want to leave them out. if you ignore them too strenuously, you might wake up one morning and find them moved to milwaukee or, i don't know. louisville or something.

i was kind of joking, i guess if you don't state that here people get excited. boston and tampa are both having very disappointing seasons based on expectations/recent history. Still time for both to turn it around of course. toronto and bal suck (altho both are slowly improving and/or most of the other al teams are getting worse). they dont suck like kc/min/sea but they still suck. there is no longer a true doormat in the east just much more mediocrity.

Compared to say the past decade it is a weaker division than it has been when it was far and away the best. all that said, when you compare it to other divisions in baseball it is still overall pretty strong. there is still the 2nd wildcard spot. at least we have that now, thanks bud!

Toronto sucks so badly that their record against the Central and Western teams is better than Oakland, Detroit, Texas or Los Angeles that's how badly they suck.

boring...this way does create more discussion which can only be good.

come on, obviously the al east doesnt suck, to really think that you'd have to be pretty stupid. i know sarcasm doesnt always come across cleanly over the internet it is a fair point. and i know we dont "know" each other, but if you decide to assume i'm not a moron i think we can work something out without lols.

what teams do you rate them better than in that bunch? i'm counting one, the bubble has to burst in oak at some point, altho maybe jj reddick (<--- joke i know his name is josh and i wish he was still playing rf for the red sox cause that bailey trade has worked out swimmingly for the sox so far) is a legit mvp candidate who knows. i might be convinced of two but i think det is due to turn it around soon. too much talent to play like that for too long. they are nowhere near texas, and not as good as LA to me.

i also know you guys (roosters and dirtdevil) are Canadian (i could be wrong on that), so i'm poking the bear a little, sorry couldnt resist.

Honestly I don't know who they are better than, not Texas, but the others all have flaws, but I defy you to show me how the others are better than Toronto either.

The Jays are somehow at .500 despite missing 2 of their top 4 starters and their closer, and with their ace having the worst season of his career. I think their future is pretty bright, but I'm not a Jays fan, strangely enough not everyone in Canada cheers for the "hometeam", particularly when they are over 3,000 kilometers away .

come on i know there is a little root root root for the home team up there. all those crazy canucks stick together unless it's in regards to the montreal or vancouver hockey teams.

fair point though

the jays are getting better, no doubt about it but they still aren't a good team to me. 2 or 3 years from now i expect them to be a legit contender unless they get bit again by a horrid injury bug. they aren't better than LA or DET right now. mainly that is a function of those 2 teams spending twice as much as toronto but money does work up to a point. like i said i think det will play much better in the 2nd half. i like the trade they just made, in the short term anyway, supposedly the sp prospect turner they gave up is legit. i could be wrong, time will tell.

if the jays are in the central, they're in the playoffs. of course, that's also true of the orioles, red sox and rays.

hmmm. i think they are would be in the race for sure but i dont see them as a lock. i still think det runs away with the division when it's all said and done. they are in the process of turning it around, i wouldnt be surprised if 2/3 weeks from now they have a 7+ game lead. Chi is much more questionable, i think a strong case could be made they are playing well over there head. cle, not good. min/kc horrible and would get to play them 18 times instead of ny/bos/tb. so yeah, they would be in the wild card hunt and given that there are two this year, they'd have a damn good shot. lock/damn good shot, probably a matter of semantics.

given there are two wild card spots now does anyone else find it stupid that they still play such an unbalanced schedule? i may have read they are changing that next year, but i also may have been hallucinating.

the unbalanced sched (with unbalanced intereague to boot) is dumb with one wildcard. it is hugely stupid with two.

Reddick isn't in the top 10 of any major statistical category at this point so his MVP chances are decidedly small, although he is a rightfielder so you never know :)
