Jack Morris For The Hall of Fame?

December 26, 2013 at 03:06AM View BBCode

Do you think [url=http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morrija02.shtml]Jack Morris[/url] should be inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Excellent pitcher and tough as nails but not a Hall of Famer in my opinion.

No. Very good and great in some big moments, but he wouldn't get my vote. No magic numbers (300 wins, 3000 k, etc), slightly better than average era vs. the league average, never finished higher than third in cy young voting. He's stuck in that middle ground of not having the numbers to be a compiler candidate and never having those 4-5 seasons of absolute domination.

If you take his numbers and protract them out as though he would average if he played 3-4 more years, he gets in as a compiler. Or if he had 1 or 2 more dominating seasons, he'd be in.

no. I like jack morris and the game he threw for the twins in '91 was epic. but that doesn't make you a hall of famer.

wow, we should talk about folks on the ballot that actually get hosed. Morris is a testament to pitchercentric thinking in that he gets over 65 percent or whatever, and tim raines gets 52%, and for christ sake, Edgar Martinez gets 36% and is one of the greatest hitters that ever picked up a bat. Fatass Curt Shilling gets 38.8% and Edgar gets 36%? that is a world gone crazy.

you got real quality on the ballot this year though. the voters will obviously go with Maddux (who derserves it) and Glavine (who doesn't) on the first ballot, and hopefully (and almost certainly) they will balance that by also going with Thomas (wow, what a hitter). they have a chance to redeem themselves for past transgressions by going with Raines or Bagwell (both deserving) but will blow it and put in, no doubt, Walking Counting Stats Craig Biggio, who was a batboy compared to Bagwell (serioulsy, Larry Walker could play four days a week and do more than Biggio could do all week with a doubleheader on Sunday.)

Here's the thing with Morris, he won 254 games, and some really big ones, but compare his numbers to another guy on last years ballot.

Morris, whip 1.296, ERA+ 105 (higher is better), wins 254, Ks 2478, 3 rings

other guy whip 1.266, ERA+ 1.08, wins 239, Ks 2201, 2 rings

The numbers aren't that different yet Morris gets 385 votes and the other guy, David Wells, gets 5 .

Trivia question on the greatness of Frank Thomas. Who are the only players to match the career slash lines of .301 / .419 / .555 that Thomas put up? No checking Google or Baseball Reference :)

You know what, I thought that you were asking about his single season numbers of .353/.487/.729. And there are a half dozen who have had single seasons that good. I think that there are 20 or so "comparable" to his career slash lines.

Six players matched his career numbers. 20 may be comparable, but not as good in one or more categories.

that's an interesting question. 6 names without cheating? ruth, bonds, Williams, mantle, mays, Hornsby?

cobb, gherig, musial?

(I did cheat to confirm that ruth, Williams and Hornsby are correct)

and cobb fails on slg and musial on obp (by two points)

so maybe foxx and I'm drawing a blank on the 6th.

foxx is correct, so we've got ruth, Williams, Hornsby, gherig, foxx and ??

it is one hell of a question. i assume it has to be a retired player.

in reference to earlier stuff in this post, the voters, according to a story i read, are well on the way to going with glavine and biggio, both understandable, but, both undeserving this season. glavine is understandable, but is underserving of a first time selection. biggio is just plain undeserving, but of course will be enshrined, acuz dumb 3000 hits.

Ha, there are only 5 players. Not sure why I wrote 6 earlier, that's my bad. Good work on getting all five!! Pretty amazing that Thomas matched those guys. I mean those 5 are pretty much baseball royalty.

and maddux, Glavine and Thomas get in. biggio just misses and morris drops of the ballot. probably the stupid veteran's committee puts him in anyway later. for some reason 2.8% of ballots did not name maddux.
