Nolan Ryan was the greatest of all time

December 17, 2004 at 09:49PM View BBCode

For the simple fact that at 40 he kicked the crap out of an uppity late 20's early 30's Robin Ventura after he charged the mound. :D

If hitters can carry bats, pitchers should be allowed to carry sidearms.

I'm sick of hitters charging the mound everytime somebody pitches inside. That's baseball. Deal with it.

What would these overpaid jerks do today if they had to play against Drysdale or Marichal or Gibson? Crowd the plate on those guys, you went down...pure and simple. Everybody knew it. It was part of the game.

I hate this crap they play now and try to pass off as baseball.

The stupidest one I can ever remember was Reggie Sanders back in his younger days with Cincy. Pedro was pitching for the Expos in the years where he was known pretty much solely as a headhunter (mostly for pitching like Gibson did all the time) and had a perfect game going in about the sixth or seventh inning. Well, Reggie was crowding the plate and Pedro hit him and Sanders charged the mound. What-did he think that Pedro thought it was more important to hit him than throw a perfect game?

I think Bonds has the biggest problem when it comes to crowding the plate. You throw on the inside corner and he gets mad, you throw inside, he gets incredibly mad, you throw near his body, oooooo its all over.

I don't think hitters should be allowed to wear any protective equipment except a batting helmet and a glove(s). These guys go up there now looking like medieval knights headed to a jousting contest.

If you need ankle pads and knee pads and wrist and elbow protection, then back off the plate. Some of those hitters are wearing more protection that the catcher.

Concering Sanders, that is pretty stupid. Shows a pretty deficient understanding of the game of baseball, if he thought Martinez would jeoparize a perfect game to throw at him. But then, nobody accused most of these guys of being rocket scientists...or scientists of any type, for that matter.

I have never seen him charge the mound though.

True he just glares out and then cranks the next one 500 feet. Steroids or not that guy has the quickest damn hands outside of Ali.

Speaking of Ryan, someone should take that last spot in the NRL, I hear the moderator is a really cool guy...:saint:

Nolan Ryan isn't even one of the 10 best pitchers of all time. He walked way too many people.

Im cooler :)

And lets not kid ourselves here people. Nolan Ryan isnt even outside the top 10 greatest pitchers of all time. Just because he walked a lot of peolple doesnt diminish the fact that he has struck out more peolple and collected more no hitter than any one pitcher will ever get. He is the greatest.

Walter Johnson, Bob Gibson, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Tom Seaver.

That's 5 guys who are better that I could think of in 3 seconds.

Dammit ME, Lefty Grove! We're going to have to kick you out of the saber club if, when the question of greatest pitcher comes up, Lefty Grove isn't on the tip of your tongue every time.

Lefty Grove would crumble under the mighty punch of the Express.

Lefty Grove's career ERA vs league ERA of his playing years was 3.06 to 4.54 (1.48 lower). Ryan was 3.19 to 3.57 (0.38 lower).

Nolan Ryan, incredibly overrated. yeah, he had lots of no hitters, and also had lots of games he got destroyed.

Not using the quote function--but Joe Cowley had a No Hitter and walked in runs. I like Nolan Ryan a .546 win percentage for 27 years is amazing. Lets not forget his .110 Batting average and 4 career homers.

I think as a Pitcher--Steve Carlton was better, not a ton better but had very similar numbers. .201 BA and he had to bat regularly-- 13 HRs and 140 RBIs are impressive for a pitcher of 24 years.

I dont think batting stats are very important for pitchers....

and the reason Ryan is overrated is not because his hitting stats are overlooked. And winning percentage is a crappy indicator of value.

Nolan Ryan was probably the most UNIQUE pitcher of all-time. No one like him before, probably not again...in our lifetimes anyway. People talk about unassailable records, and I think the safest record in baseball is Ryan's walks allowed record. He had to be awfully good to overcome that kind of handicap. I think there was one season he walked 200 guys and won 20 games. Yep...I double checked...1974. He almost did it again in 1977, but he only won 19 games that year.

But the greatest ever? No. Not really even close. Not Top 5. Maybe Top 10. Amazing? Yes. Deserving of every honor he ever received? Yep. Great guy? Absolutely. THE #1 pitcher I want if I'm starting a franchise from scratch? Nope.

Names already mentioned: Grove, Walter Johnson, Gibson, Randy Johnson, Clemens, Seaver, Carlton. Names not mentioned who would certainly deserve consideration ahead of Ryan if you were starting a franchise: Spahn, Young, Mathewson, Maddux.

This is not intended as a rap on Ryan. Unless Clemens wants to do it...and he might...I don't see anyone pitching as effectively as Ryan for as many seasons. As I said earlier, right now Ryan is the most unique, and perhaps the most amazing pitcher, in that he was able to be a power pitcher for 27 years. But when you compare his best seasons to other guys, there were better pitchers. Not loads better, but better.
