Best end of Big Unit Trade

What do you guys think? I would say the yankees did, as usual.

It could come out pretty even. Johnson could start to rapidly decline after this season and Vazquez could revert back to the form he showed in the first half last year and continue to develop into an ace. Or Vazquez could continue to suck and Johnson could be a dominant pitcher well into his 40's. Or they could both flop this season. There are a lot of possible scenarios but most likely it will come out about even.

Yeah, Johnson is getting preety old and the Yankees, if theyre lucky, could still coax 2 maybe 3 solid years out of Johnson's arm. Vazquez is still preety young, and hes a solid starter, too.

The Yankees with this trade can end up VERY VERY good or with bad luck and all those ancient arms they could end up REALLY bad too. Or at least bad by Yankee standards

Yankees already made the playoffs. What they need is for Randy to give them a few strong playoff starts.

I hate in when trades are made just for the $. Maybe its because I'm a Redsox fan and we sold Ruth.

hm. But the Yanks got arguably the best left-hander ever, even though he's old, never underestimate the power of the unit. I think he still has 2 good seasons in his arm.

That's right, He threw his 7th no hitter when he was in his 40's.

The Yankees definately got the better of the deal this year. Even if Javier Vazquez was to pitch to his potential in the playoffs for the '05 Yankees, he's no five-time Cy Young Award winning Hall of Famer. In five years, when Johnson has retired, even if he does have a ring or two more, this deal may look great for the Diamondbacks, who will still have the high potential of Vazquez. I'd say they managed pretty well out of a bad situation and deserve some positive credit.
Their other moves this winter, on the other hand....

I believe it worked out well for both ball clubs. Johnson helps Yanks get another pennant and Vazquez gets better and becomes the stud

Here's a quote from Arizona general partner Ken Kendrick:

"Our view of this is that we effectively traded Randy Johnson for Vazquez, Halsey, Shawn Green and $19 million."

That sounds pretty good to me. They get all those guys for free next year, basically.

They're paying Green over $10 million a year on his extention, which means he is essentially a FA signing.

Add one perfect game and one 20 K Game. Johnson is also the Lefty with most career strikeouts and almost broke the single season strikeout record a few years back.

Green could end up being a bargain. I know he's struggled the past couple of years but remember he was a 40/20 guy just a couple of seasons ago, plus the D-Backs got to renetotiate his contract so that he's not making 16 mil this season but rather an average of 10 over the next three. Additionally, the Dodgers are picking up most of his tab for this year, the Yankees are paying for Vazquez plus and they don't have to pay Johnson's 16 mil. Even with their free agent spending spree I think the D-Backs will end up paying less this year than last (although the payroll might be higher-the did receive 19 million from the Dodgers and Yankees) plus they'll have a significantly improved team (but how could it have been worse?)

The Yankees essentially trade away their last prospect for another shot at the WS. Even though Johnson signed an extention, he should be considered one year at a time. People like to point to Nolan Ryan pitching into his 40s, and Randy has been amazing but remember he has a long history of back problems and has to receive an injection into his knee every time he pitches.

The Dodgers? I haven't gotten them figured out yet. I know DePosta would like to put his stamp on the team but I wonder where the offense is coming from. I'm not a big JD Drew fan and I really don't see any hitters in the lineup that would make me stay in my seat instead of taking a trip to the concession stand. This team is so much like the 2003 version that had great pitching and no hitting that its scary.

I think the deal helped the D-Backs more overall, but the Yankees got what they wanted/needed without giving up any key ingredients.

Shawn Green is a preety good player, and the D-Backs need some of those:lol:
