Rumor:AL playoff OFer test positive for steroids

October 28, 2005 at 04:31AM View BBCode

"An American League outfielder on a postseason team tested positive for steroids, according to his agent, but the player is appealing the results."

Certainly interesting, but I didn't make much of it until we talked to Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll on today's Sports Bloggers Live. Will writes a weekly column for BP that Peter Gammons has called an "industry standard," and he also wrote a book called 'The Juice' earlier this year. His response when told of the rumor?

Carroll: "I really can't talk about it right now. It should be coming out within the next two weeks."

SBL: "Is this a name we're actually going to care about?"

Carroll: "Yes."

SBL: "Is it a World Series champion?"

Carroll: "I really can't talk about it."

SBL: "I would hope not, because that might turn those White Sox black... Will, cough once if he's on the White Sox... Cough twice if it's Gary Sheffield."

Carroll: "I was involved in the appeals process so I can't comment at all."

Here's the full audio interview. The dialogue dictated here takes place between 6:20 and 7:00.

If this is true, there's a 1-in-4 chance someone on the White Sox used steroids this season and then contributed to Chicago's first World Series victory since 1917. And there's a 100% chance a player used and then participated in the playoffs. So... Who was it? And what would Selig do if that player was the World Series MVP or the Game 2 hero? Would it be a Black Sox-level fiasco? Say it ain't so, Jermaine!

Given what we presume to know -- that the guy is in the AL, made the playoffs, is relatively significant and plays outfield -- the list of possibilities is only 12-deep:

· Chicago: Podsednik, Dye, Rowand

· Anaheim: Anderson, Guerrero, Finley

· New York: Matsui, Sheffield, Williams

· Boston: Ramirez, Damon, Nixon

I've got my money on Finley... His old, useless self needed it the most.

And I sure hope it isn't one of the White Sox OFers... Would definitely taint their WS win for me.

"Psst. I heard it was Brady Anderson"

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was Vlad Gurerro. Maybe he was distracted by this situation and that's why he played so poorly. The most likely suspects are Sheffield, Gurerro, and Ramirez but Manny just doesn't seem like the type. My guess is that it will be someone like Rowand or Nixon. Not an insignificant player but not an all world player.

Podsednik: Two home runs in the postseason. ZERO in the regular season. Hmm . . .

I was going to say something like this. My money would be on somebody like Trot Nixon, but Guererro is a strong possibility. 100% agree with the Manny statment, no way he would do something like this. Of course now, it will probably be him becasue I said that.

You're probably just joking, but anyway..

Podsednik does have power (hit 10+ HRs the previous year for the Brewers), but Ozzie didn't let him use it. Just wanted him to just get on base a ton with walks and singles to set up the rest of the offense...

Edit: this was directed at YAZ... damn you, kujayhawks, for posting before me

It's all Damon. Never trust a guy with long hair.

Ironically, my wife just told me that she heard from a friend who has a friend who is an employee of the Yankees that it was indeed Johnny Damon and he's in the appeal process right now. It's weird that she said that because I didn't bring it up first, she just told me. Granted, a friend of a friend of the assistant to the travelling secretary at Yankee Stadium is almost the worst source possible but it's something. Being a Red Sox fan, if it is Damon, that will break my heart. The only thing worse would be if it was Ortiz but he's not an outfielder.

I never used steroids in my life. I get all my muscle naturally, the hard way by tossing chairs at innocent women.

Aaron Rowand or Jermaine Dye wouldn't surprise me.

Only 1 player was tested positive, but from all the guilty-before-proven-innocent comments you'd think all 12 were guilty. This is proof that MLB has a long, long way to go to fix/stengthen their steroids testing policy and eliminate suspicion.
Practical testing methods can't guarantee that every player in every game is playing 'roid-free. But, players should be tested often enough and randomly enough to give the fans confidence that the players are clean and therefore the results and stats are pure.

Normally, most players turn to steriods when they need them to come off an injury, or have used them in the past, and are getting old, so they went back to them, regardless of the risk.

Podsednik, Finley, Guerrero, Anderson, & Nixon all fit this bill. Damon & Rowand both have an unusual look to them.

I doubt a Yankee is going to get busted. Shef had his brush with the law, Matsui , i doubt & Williams(who cares?) is a long-time pro.

But, if I had to push it, I'd bet Nixon or Anderson. Both guys have bad backs, and have been losing power, and weren't guaranteed superstars enough where they might push the envelope of stupidity.

Please, please don't be a White Sox. This is as a fan of baseball, & of the team.

Now, play some f'n Journey!

I'm going with Damon, that friends friend thing totally won me over, such a reliable source... plus, I need revenge for what he did to the Yanks in the playoffs last year.

Where did it say the OF was a starter?
skierdude44

It didn't but he said it would be a name that people would care about. Generally most people don't care too much about a 4th outfielder.

I think it's Damon. I know guys fill out as they get older but I met him a couple of times about eleven years ago and I never would have expected him to look the way he does now. Maybe it is just from working out but with the way owners and players have allowed this to go on it's only natural that fans are going to speculate.

People dont care about Timo Perez? Juan Rivera? Gabe Kapler? Tony Womack and Bubba Crsoby? I disagree, those are all huge platers. And any one of them could be at fault. I still say Timo Perez, but Tony Womack could definitely be it, just look at his slupping percentage...

When it said it would be someone we'd care about. And by the way, that doesn't mean Timo Perez.

Sorry hobos, but I wouldn't care about any of those players you listed (besides maybe Timo, due to him being on a WS winning team, though no thanks to him).

If this goes about on par with how baseball does things, it'll be Podsednick...or more likely, Dye. Now that would be perfect.
