well boston certainly won't trade him to the yankees. maybe seattle will step up at the last minute?

It sounds good for the Marlins but unless Manny learns how to pitch it won't push them into the playoffs.

Are the Marlins any kind of threat? I honestly haven't followed them very closely at all. Is this going to be yet another surprise Marlins playoff run this year?

1.5 out in the NL East. Bah. The only thing worse in the D-Backs 1 game lead in the NL West. I don't think they are any sort of remote "playoff threat."

and the diamondbacks will probably make the playoffs becasue everyone else in their division is so worthless. Dodgers maybe, but diamondbacks are better than them too.

Marlins are screwed. They started off hot becuase they have an extremely front loaded schedule. they are going to "fade" at the end because they have one of the hardest schedules in baseball here on in. BP has their petoca adjusted playoff odds at 6.5%and the diamondbacks will probably make the playoffs becasue everyone else in their division is so worthless. Dodgers maybe, but diamondbacks are better than them too.

Sorry, Khaz, it's true. I'll take the D-Backs SPing over anyone in baseball, but the division as a whole just sucks.

No apologies needed. It's absolutely true.:(
I still think the Rockies stand a chance. Aaron Cook and Brandon Webb hold the lead for most wins in the NL currently, as scary as that is.

On the surface, it seems like a good deal for the Pirates and the Sox and a mediocre one for the Dodgers. But I don't know the prospects that well.

That's a good analysis. The 3B is totally legit. Not sure which of the pitchers is the best, but they got 3, so it can't be a bad deal, I don't think.
Manny will play well for this season, which is what the Dodgers need. They have some younger talent coming up next year and the year after, so they don't need Manny to be their 3/4 guy for the next 4 years, just this one.

The Sox get rid of a big problem that was threatening to get bigger, and replace him with similar production but without all the baggage. They have to unload a couple of prospects to do it, but I'm not sold on Hansen's long-term value. Basically, they retain the status quo on the field, and vastly improve things in the locker room (assuming this doesn't have some sort of debilitating effect on David Ortiz but really, the man's a professional, one should always expect a professional to do their job until they show you otherwise).
The Pirates get rid of someone who wasn't in their long-term plans, and get some decent-upside youngsters.

The Dodgers are a schizophrenic organization - they still come up with a decent amount of talent out of their farm system, but they're completely committed to winning their division every year, so a lot of guys who should be playing end up getting blocked by veterans. And then they hired Joe Torre, who's sort of calcified into an anti-rookie manager. If they end up winning the NL West this year then they'll have achieved their goal, but one wonders if they wouldn't be better served by dialing it back to 3 or 4 and committing themselves to a youth movement.The Sox get rid of a big problem that was threatening to get bigger, and replace him with similar production but without all the baggage. Here here. That's exactly what the Dodgers have done since moving to LA. They are short-sighted and frustrating. Anyway, Manny will do well for the remainder of the season and gives the man edge in the very weak NL West.Pages: 1 2
