Since the other thread has gone off track....

He certainly has put up Hall worthy numbers, but how would you rank him amongst pitchers of his generation? I think that also factors in the equation. I'm not including anyone under 30 here or over 50. There may have been other names I've forgotten, but I think Mike would be in the middle of the pack here with some guys like Halladay and Oswalt still having a decent chunk left to their careers.

Roger Clemens
Greg Maddux
Tom Glavine
John Smoltz
Pedro Martinez
Randy Johnson
Roy Halladay
Curt Schilling
Roy Oswalt
Andy Pettitte
Kevin Brown

nuzzy, you should send a u2 to happy. he is the only one who knows whether a player was any good or not. we like mussina okay, but we have no idea how he compares to those hurlers there.*

*we do know, none of those guys could handle barry bonds, because barry bonds was the big headed awesome.

Roy Halladay contributed exactly zero to the mapping of the human genome.

well, as to your list, i'd say that (extra-curricular activities not being a factor) clemens, maddux, martinez, johnson, glavine all get in. brown, pettite do not. smoltz is on the bubble, but i think his post-season success and closer dominance get him in eventually. schilling is also i'd say a bubble guy, along with mussina. the jury is still out on oswalt and halladay, but i'd suggest they're a couple of cy youngs and/or a title or three away. right now i'd give halladay a better shot, assuming he either signs with a contending team next year or toronto gets it's act together, which is unlikely.

I'm assuming we're not using relievers in here? Otherwise there are a bunch more I'd have to rank.

I suspect you can bicker placement a bit and maybe I forgot a few-I usually do.

Jimmy Key? Huh? did he have a good career? I thought he was an oriole

and was david cone that good? I didnt realize.

well assuming cone is that good, i think all the guys above Mussina in that list are HOF worthy at least.

Cone and Mussina are an interesting comparison. Mussina was solidly good for longer. Cone's peaks were better.

Cone twice was in the top ten in MVP voting (1988 and 1994) while Mussina never topped 19th. Cone won the CY and was in the top 5, 4 more times, Mussina was 2nd once and was 4th or 5th,. 5 more times. and 6th twice more.

In short Mussina was usually solid enough to be in the discussion for the best pitcher in the league, although clearly never the best while Cone could be as dominating as anyone when he was right. Cone's career wasn't as consistent as Mussina's (Mussina had 11 seasons of 15 or more wins, and 17 seasons of 10 or more while Cone had 5 seasons of 15 or more and 11 of 10 or more). I can certainly see putting Mussina ahead of Cone but I think the argument is that they're close.
