He certainly has put up Hall worthy numbers, but how would you rank him amongst pitchers of his generation? I think that also factors in the equation. I'm not including anyone under 30 here or over 50. There may have been other names I've forgotten, but I think Mike would be in the middle of the pack here with some guys like Halladay and Oswalt still having a decent chunk left to their careers.

Since the other thread has gone off track....He certainly has put up Hall worthy numbers, but how would you rank him amongst pitchers of his generation? I think that also factors in the equation. well, as to your list, i'd say that (extra-curricular activities not being a factor) clemens, maddux, martinez, johnson, glavine all get in. brown, pettite do not. smoltz is on the bubble, but i think his post-season success and closer dominance get him in eventually. schilling is also i'd say a bubble guy, along with mussina. the jury is still out on oswalt and halladay, but i'd suggest they're a couple of cy youngs and/or a title or three away. right now i'd give halladay a better shot, assuming he either signs with a contending team next year or toronto gets it's act together, which is unlikely.

hmm. well i guess i only really remember his decline. he did have those two really good years with the yankees. maybe i remembered that, i dunno.

In short Mussina was usually solid enough to be in the discussion for the best pitcher in the league, although clearly never the best while Cone could be as dominating as anyone when he was right. Cone's career wasn't as consistent as Mussina's (Mussina had 11 seasons of 15 or more wins, and 17 seasons of 10 or more while Cone had 5 seasons of 15 or more and 11 of 10 or more). I can certainly see putting Mussina ahead of Cone but I think the argument is that they're close.
