Were you watching the ALCS just now?

If both runners aren't on a base, and get tagged, BOTH ARE OUT.
Seriously. We need a new MLB commissioner. I'd like to be the first to nominate Mr. Tyson Lowery.

McClelland was just lazy and let Posada get in his way, blocking his view. He is managing to make this game hilarious to watch, at the least.

Who the hell decided Tim McClelland umpiring a playoff series was a good idea?

Unions.
We have to give everyone a "fair" chance to work the postseason. Because life is always supposed to be fair of course.
I'm somewhat distainful of unions these days (well for the past 40 years or so)

Bart the ump still had to make the playoff roster for umps. I remembering them saying they take a certain percentage of the best umps (based on regular season scoring)... He is awful though.

actually, he made a very nice makeup call at third base on the swisher tagup. everybody in the stadium knew swisher was out at second. so the umpire called him out going home.
(the other play at third was just funny really. tragically badly called, but funny.)

Drew has it right on the Posada/Cano vaudeville act, McClelland was out of position so he thought Cano's foot was on the bag.
Bad umpiring to be sure but worse would be calling what you don't see.
There were a bunch of close calls in the game, the umps missed Swisher at 2nd but then, as tm points out, made up nicely for it by blowing the "left too early" call.
The Cano/Posada thing wasn't a "close call" just a blown one and had no affect on the outcome, except it appeared to get the crowd back in the game.
Some Yahoo blogger called the Cano/Posada thing "the worst call of all time", proving once again that bloggers often have no perspective - ask any St. Louis Cardinal fan whether McLelland's call was as bad as Denkinger's in '85.

There's no such thing as make-up calls. That's just double the bad calls.

instant replay... now!
all of america can see he blew those calls, but the umps aren't allowed to?
pure, unadulterated nonsense.
the umpires' job(s) is to make the right call. it's their only responsibility. text messaging the homeplate ump from a private ump box with instant replay would be so easy to do.
bud selig is, was, and always will be, a myopic, pathetic excuse for a commissioner.

Yeah, this is pretty much the exact reason why I stopped doing the mindless Bud-bashing thing.

it's why I only watch the playoffs and WS, and never pay to go to the ballpark.
if someone doesn't give me free tickets, I don't go.

yeah, that play was ridiculous...
I agree that umps should never purposely make a bad call, regardless of whether or not another bad call was made earlier. Did you see the video of McClelland explaining the two calls that he blew? Apparently, he "felt in his heart" that Swisher left 3rd too early.

I don't get the concept of boycotting a sport by not going to the stadium. Yet you watch the game on TV, and still love to do so? I've heard people bash the music industry for greed while downloading hundreds of songs for free. Its fine to say its being done in protest of the system, but it isn't really much of a protest, is it?

sure. but sometimes two wrongs make a right. swisher was out. it took one play longer, but he was most assuredly out. the second base umpire knew he blew the call, it happens. but he can't take it back after he calls him safe. was the call at third a makeup? not really. but it worked out well.

you call the guy safe and then realize he is out, then you say "oh, im sorry, he was out." You dont go and make another bad call to avoid admitting you were wrong.

the same umpire didn't make the two calls happy. i said it was a makeup call, it really wasn't. if was a blown call on another play by a different umpire. it had the effect of a make up call.
also, the second base umpire. called the play safe. you just hardly ever see an umpire reverse a call he made. that is just the way it is. if you reverse yourself, you just get the manager out on the field to raise hell at you, and make you look worse than the big screen replay is already making you look. you make the call, and that's it. occasionally another umpire that could see it better will overrule it. very occasionally.

Have you guys ever umpired?
After you blow a call (and know it) it is really easy to see a close play and say, " crap was he out or safe?" Then you remember back to a few innings ago when you blew the previous call against team A because you were checking out the MILF in right field. It is almost instinct to make the call favoring team A.
Then again this is coming from someone who umped little league baseball for 4 years... and learned from watching the little league world series 2 months ago that the ball has to cross the whole plane of the plate to be called a strike...as opposed to the big diamond, where the ball has to touch any part of the plate (hitting corners). Opps.

everybody makes mistakes.
think about it. you can find a kazillion sox fans that can complain forever about bucky dent hitting a home run to beat them. because bucky dent was a turd that got lucky.
you will find very few fans that complain forever about buckner and the ball between the legs. because anyone can make a mistake, buckner was unlucky. no need to beat him forever about it.
you will find amost zero fans, of any team, that look back to some blown call by an umpire in some game, somewhere, and say, "that guy, he cost us the series." because anyone who is a fan of a team knows the umpires are human, and their team could have won anyway by playing better. basketball and football fans are awesome at blaming the officials for their teams losing. i don't know why that is, but they are.
certainly they could do some stuff with instant replay, expand it some, there would have to be a limit to it. but there is no real demand for it with the folks who actually play and manage in the big leagues. why? because they understand the umpires are human, and the outcome isn't on the umpires. its on the players.
