for j.aa happ and a couple of mid prospects. which brings to mind two things. are they now the favourites in the NL? and is this and admission that they miscalculated in trading away cliff lee?

I think that Roy Halladay has more than replaced Cliff Lee ... so, no, not an admission of messing that up, I don't think. I'm pretty sure that they could not have kept Lee and still landed Halladay.

Also, I'm not sure if it makes them the favorite in the NL or not. On paper they certainly have the best team, but the way that Atlanta has played so far, I have wonder whether PHI can even catch them.

It has to be right? They said they wanted to trade Lee to build their farm system, which is still bad. If they keep Lee, they have Halladay, Lee, Hamels, and get to keep Happ. I thought it was a stupid move to begin with, Lee has been arguably the best pitcher in the game for the past 2-3 years. They should still be very good, but until they get past the Braves, I'm picking the Braves for the NL.

i like cliff lee. cliff lee is a very good pitcher. but he's not in the same class as roy halladay.

They could have kept Lee, but maybe not after this year. But if you have to have less of a minor league system to get back to the world series for the 3rd straight year, wouldn't you do it?

I think they miscalculated in trading Lee but they really couldn't have known that Blanton was going to tank so badly .

Give them credit for realizing that they needed another top flight pitcher and going out and getting it done.

The National League is shaping up to be great viewing, it'll be interesting to see what San Fran, St. Louis etc. do in the next two days.

The Giants lead the NL in home runs this month, I believe. Andres Torres has been masquerading as a leadoff hitter to everyone's delight. Giant fans are just about giddy when you speak with them. They did blow a 9-2 lead to the Marlins in the 7th yesterday, though. censored happens, I guess.

The issue with Lee is that Ownership told Amaro that he had to keep payroll at a certain level. Had they known early enough they would have simply not offered arbitration to Blanton and kept Lee. When the Halladay deal was coming along Amaro knew he'd have to trade one of his pitchers. Tried to give Blanton away and couldn't so had to give Lee instead.

The Oswalt deal is different because the Astros are paying half of his salary meaning he'll make 6 mil this year and 6 mil next (or however they want to split it).

Despite what Amaro said when Lee was traded it wasn't a baseball move, it was one that came about purely for economic reasons.
