NFL Lockout?

March 08, 2011 at 01:24AM View BBCode

What do you guys think? I'm thinking we'll see one more 1-week extension before they come to an agreement...

There won't be a lockout. There is more than enough money involved to make any reasonable party happy. Right now the NFL is the most popular sport in the country but a strike kills a lot of goodwill with the fans, they don't want to lose that momentum.

Do you think it will be settled soon or closer to the season though? Cause I'm betting we'll see at least a prelim agreement within the next 2 weeks...

I think they will at least have an arrangement in place for THIS season prior to the draft in April. I wouldn't be surprised though if they negotiate it as a 1 or 2 year deal and then re-negotiate during the season(s).

I'm anticipating missed games.

honestly, this is a dispute that could probably be equitably settled by the average 5 year old. for that reason, i'm with bart.

i imagine the eventual settlement will look something like:

1) the owners get 1.5 billion off the top
2) 18 game schedule
3) rookie wage limits
4) larger rosters (to offset 2)
5) better health coverage for former players
6) higher salary cap with floor
7) reduced or eliminated franchise tags
8) earlier true free agency (to offset 3)

I don't see this happening..they may have a working agreement to get them some more time to finalize stuff, but I don't think they'll do something for just 1 to 2 years....they'll want this to be a long-term thing, so if they have something that lasts 2 years, then you're going to run all the way to the deadline again..

I do think dd has the final part looking good...but who knows?

That sounds almost too good to be true. Everyone wins. :)

if my contract is based on 16 games, and they want me to play 18, then you're going to have to pay me the difference.

Not if your union, you know the legal bargaining unit that you put in charge of negotiating a collective bargaining agreement, bargains it away .

It's the same number of games overall, since they'd eliminate two preseason games.

that will be the owners argument, certainly. the two aren't at all equitable though.

as i said, a 5 year old could settle this thing in an hour or so. but since the owners seem intent on driving the players union back to the stone age, i'm not optomistic that they'll allow any 5 year olds into the bargaining session.

If by stone age you mean playing 6 hours of football more, then yes. I think if there's an increase in roster size, you can afford to do the 18 games. I'm a big proponent of the preseason games, so don't get me wrong (great place to find hidden talent), but I also think that if done right, it'll work out the same. The owners don't gain that much more from an 18-game schedule from tickets though..only from TV networks..

no, i mean the 1960's. the owners are trying to break the union and run the league more or less by fiat. that's understandably not going to fly with the union, which is why we're here.

(also, the big money comes from the tv contracts, not the tickets. that's the whole idea behind the extended schedule.)
