The only legitimate major league position starters on the team are Mike Sweeney, Angel Berroa (though he's playing right now like he's never seen a baseball before), and perhaps David DeJesus.
The only pitchers who belong in the major leagues are Zack Greinke (who's received 9 runs of support in his seven starts so far...only 4 while he was actually on the mound), Runelvys Hernandez, and, when he's healthy, Jeremy Affeldt.
Denny Bautista, Kyle Snyder, Mike Wood, Ambriox Burgos, Andrew Cisco, and Leo Nunez are a dynamite AAA staff, and that's where all those kids belong.
Mark Teahen, John Buck, and Ruben Gotay all ought to be starting everyday in AAA, but not in the majors.
SO...this "youth movement" is going to accomplish two things. First, it will prevent the team from being anything resembling competitive on the field.
Second, it will retard the progress of what is a pretty good group of prospects, most of whom are nowhere near ready for everyday duty in the major leagues.
I guess the Royals didn't have enough CP's to go around in Omaha, so they're tanking at the ML level so their best prospects get lots of off-season IC's.:lol:

Tony Pena is not wholly, or even primarily to blame for the struggles the Royals are having. If the Royals pitch Greinke's arm off and give him 300+ innings, he will get TONS of IC's and win the Cy Young in two years.

I'm on record as predicting that all the NL managers make it through the season but that Pena, Torre and possibly Lou Piniella and/or Eric Wedge would not be managing their teams at the end of the season.

I'd agree Wedge will probably be there unless the Indians dive bomb to a .400 record which might be possible the way they're playing right now.
As for Torre, how could you even begin to call any prediction of a Steinbrenner firing to be crazy. Here's what's going to happen in New York. Stottlemyre is the first to go but if the club is still foundering under .500 by the all star break then both Cashman and Torre will be replaced.

My feeling on Manuel is that when the Phils put in a new GM he'll let Manuel finish out the year and fire him at the end. I think Hunsicker (when he takes over) will take some time and learn the organization's personel and I don't think Manuel, incompetent as he is, will be the first to go.

I'm not sure if Torre will be fired but if Stottlemyre is let go Torre will probably follow him. Torre has certain guys that he likes and respects and mainly those guys are the guys who won championships with him as either coaches or players. First George pushed Zim out of town and if he fires Stottlemyre I think Torre will call it quits there too.

I think Torre is safe there for AT LEAST another year after this one, even if the Yankees SUCK all year long. He had done what no one else had, and that was (with a lot of help) return the Yankees to glory. They've been contenders every year since 95, and you don't fire that kind of leadership after ONE losing season. Yes, Torre might quit, but he won't be fired.That being said, in a Top Ten list by David Letterman, one of the Top Ten jobs that has more job security than being Yankees Manager was being the guy who paints the names on the manager's door...

When they started winning again, Mattingly, Bernie Williams, Gerald Williams, Pat Kelly, Sterling Hitchcock, Andy Pettite, Scott Kamienicki, Mariano Rivera were all home grown players.
In the intervening years they added home grown products like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Alfonso Soriano, Nick Johnson. In addition to those guys, Russ Davis was home grown, then traded for Tino Martinez. Ricky Ledee, Ruben Rivera were homegrown homegrown guys that the GM turned into Irabu, then Westbrook, and ultimately, David Justice.
Part of the problem now is bad free agent signings...Brown, Giambi. Part of it is the system working the way the system is supposed to work...when you're a first or second place team for a decade, you don't get good draft picks and the farm system dries up.
Hate 'em or not, you have to give the Yanks their props. For a decade they did it as good as anybody ever has, and it wasn't ALL go out and buy players. Certainly that helped, but it was more than that.
