I woke up at 3 and heard the news and was fairly giddy the next few hours.

I also love that he turned down more overall money from the Yankees. Suck it Steinbrenners.

Waking up at 3 and giddy don't ever belong in the same sentence :D

Sure looks like the Phillies won't be able to miss the playoffs even if they tried.

phillies fan here - excited about the signing but worried about their lineup

its pretty weak

they'll have to win like the giants last yr

their lineup is much better than what the giants fielded lasy year and the rotation is better.

Wow. For the next season or two this will (probably) be the most dominant pitching staff that I've ever seen. (I'm too young to remember the Orioles back in the day.)

they proably add a hitter. maybe beltre? or a trade, more likely. phillies are good at trading for stuff.

It's a rare deal, he gets $2 million more per season, if the reports of the Yankees offer are true, but leaves some overall money on the table .

In all honesty I never thought he was going to New York, I don't think he wanted the whole NY pressure cooker thing. Now in Philly he gets $24 million a year and doesn't even have to be the #1 .

That's one hell of a rotation .

I also love the way the media are falling all over themselves to declare Lee as some altruistic folk hero for taking this deal.

C'mon people the guy got a 5 year deal at an average of $24 million per year, plus a vesting option, it's not like he signed for the league minimum .

just didn't want to play with jeter, obviously.

you had your fun already, with the big Yankee Press Conference last week. i will summarize:

"We recognize that Derek Sanderson Jeter sucks, with the bat and the glove. Still, we believe he should be the highest paid shortstop, and have made it so. Because we can."*

You think that was fun? I'm glad they didn't give him what he was asking for, but I'm not exactly thrilled about that deal, either.

i think jeter wanted a lot of money, because he looked at AJ Burnette and said, wow, if that thing is getting paid, then i really need to get paid.

can't blame a guy for that, really.

I'm thrilled that he didn't go to NY, but he didn't take less money.

unless i've missed the new math, $120 million is less than $150 million.

Less guaranteed total dollars, yes, but more per year. If he stays productive, reaches the vesting options, and makes something like $10 million/year in his next deal, he'll make more.
dirtdevil

December 16, 2010 at 07:06PM View BBCode

the vesting options give him some more, yes, but not $150 million. which would mean he'll have taken less money. and assumed more risk in the bargain, since there's no knowing right now what his health/effectiveness will be like after his philly contract is up.

Well actually I'm not sure anyone really knows definitively what the New York and Texas offers were . What we do know is that he'll make at least $132.5 million for 6 years in Philadelphia and $147.5 for those same 6 years if he pitches 200 innings in 2015 or 400 combined in 2014-15 (source:[url=http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/111984199.html?page=1&c=y]Philly.com[/url])

Rumours are NY offered $138 over 6 years plus a $15 vesting option which would be $153 over 7 years, other rumours (AP) have them at $148 guaranteed over 7 years .

Texas was supposed to be around $150 million for 7 years with some money deferred .

Bottom line is Lee may miss out on some dollars if he craps out in 2014-15 but he may end up making as much in six years as NY offered in seven. He didn't leave a whole lot, if anything, on the table and notions to the contrary are silly .
