this list is as stupid as the 1000 best baseball players that guy posted about a year ago.

tarkenton was a good QB, but I'll name the better ones, in no particular order:

Staubach, Unitas, Griese, Stabler, Dawson, Jurgenson, Meredith, (that's just his peers), Baugh, Graham, Layne, Montana, Elway, Marino, Moon, Aikman, Frave, Manning, Brady, Kelly...

the only list he belongs on is "punkass biotches I'd like to punch in the face".

I like Big Earl Tim but I don't know that I'd take him over any of the 5 listed (those who don't know history would say Van Buran of course and they may be right)

earl was jim brown playing against real football players.

I'd love to see Jim "wifebeater" brown in the modern era. he wouldn't be the same dominant guy he was when d-linemen weighed 230 lbs.

and jerry rice sux.

Sometimes you have interesting things to say, and sometimes every thread you contribute to immediately becomes 1000x stupider. Can you guess which one this is?

every thread you "contribute" to becomes one in which I have to skip over posts.

can you guess which threads those are?

(hint: all of them)

I think the stupidest thing about the 1000 best players ever thread, if I'm remembering correctly, is that he then posted the entire list and tried to debate the merits of all of them.

Marshall Faulk, greatest RB ever.

I mean, what would the defense for that be?

Or how about this: Junior Seau and Derrek Brooks make the list. But not Butkis.

or... Brooks > Ray Lewis...???

I mean, if I made this metric, I would look at the list and say "oh. well nevermind."

God tells me that Walter Payton is the best player ever, and who are you to say my God is wrong?

Also, there is this:

Tim Tebow: Better than Warren Moon.

Nice list, Bryan. I debated between Woodson and Lane for my DB selection.

@shep...Rice may be a tool but you must be completely off your rocker if you think that he sucked. He was the best WR ever, by quite a margin. Also, Tarkenton's numbers were quite good. If you go back and look at them, especially when compared to guys who played when he did, you'll see just how good they are. Like someone has already said, just because the guy has become completely a nutjob in his old age doesn't change the fact that he was a great player. And speaking of looking at stats, have you looked at Jason Campbell's? In each of his four seasons he's thrown more TDs than the last and in each of his four seasons he's thrown more TDs than INTs. That's at least average by most people's standards. His QB rating has improved every season as well, up to 86.4 last season, which puts him at 15th for 2009 (right in the middle), in front of guys like Carson Palmer, Matt Ryan, Matt Hasselbeck, and Matt Cassel. So if I was the Redskins I wouldn't freak out about Campbell. Instead, I would focus on keeping a coach around for more than two seasons so that Campbell could develop properly. And, shep, I'm glad you aren't the GM of a team I like because while Tim Tebow was a great player in college, his bad footwork, lack of experience under center, and long and slow throwing motion make him a major project. I'm thinking that it will take at least four or five seasons for Tebow to get up to speed, and even then would the changes in footwork and throwing motion be a part of his muscle memory (in other words, when under pressure would he revert to his old ways?)? I wouldn't mind taking a risk on him in the second half of the third round or later. Anything earlier than that is just an unnecessary risk.

So, back on topic, I want to hear someone make a case for Reggie White being the best player ever. Even if you don't think he was, make a case for him.

Now that's just silly .

(Warren Moon was a Seahawks quarterback.)

Matt, if we don't think that he was the best player ever, why would we make an argument for him to be?
