Gopher it. I just like to go bezerk on the boards.
You can use the formula, as well, or tweak it as you see fit.

I'm ignoring all Awards until the RF bonus is eliminated from the MVP :saint:

Are you showing any substantial influence on that. Are RFs getting a higher percentage of awards than you'd expect them to? Do you have any data or are you being contrarian? Do you think that RFs and LFs are and should be rated the same as 1B and LF which is what you're saying there. The truth is that EVERY position other than 1B and LF has a bonus and my contention is that if you're arguing that position is irrelevant that you're wrong. If you want to contend that the RF bonus is too high and should be lowered, then to what would you like to see it lowered to and what evidence to support your argument other than "everyone knows this" can you show.

I think he was teasing, Bart ...
Right after the formula was implemented I noticed what seemed like an inordinately high number of MVP awards going to RF's. However, there weren't very many that I would say were wrongly awarded. In most instances it was a case of 2 very deserving candidates, 1 a RF and the other from a different position, with the RF winning a close race.
This player won 4 consecutive MVP awards immediately following the implementation of the new formula:
http://topindustrynews.com/player.jsp?id=4904991
While he was certainly very good during those seasons, he probably should NOT have won the award in at least 2 of them. I think that there was a later penalty put in for repeat winners, which would eliminate this problem, but it was an early concern from me in regards to the current MVP formula.
This D+ health RF won back-to-back MVP's in the VCL the past two seasons:
http://topindustrynews.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5883763
But it is really hard to argue that he was undeserving since he OPS'd over 1 in each of the seasons.
There are probably some very good examples in the BHL of RF's winning the award in front of more deserving candidates from other positions. However, I'll let roosters get into those in more detail, I don't really have any problem with the MVP formula as it is, but I was concerned at the beginning that the RF bonus was too high.

And that's my point about this whole RP thing. Even when the MVP goes to the wrong guy, it goes to one of the top 5.
The RP in my example is simply horrible. It's like giving the MVP to a guy who led the league in steals, runs scored and K/W ratio.
Or some such nonsense.

Shep - you'll need to take it up with Rolaids. Perhaps they have a Suggest Enhancements board on their website.

So, if MLB has a stupid formula, WE have to have a stupid formula?
Believe me, if I thought the numbnuts at MLB would listen, I'd be on a conference call right now.
I simply resort to buying any other different antacid besides Rolaids, and mention them all whenever I go off on a rant about their moronic award.
Thanks for listening, though.

I don't suffer much from the acid reflux stuff. When I do, I buy anything but Fireman award sponsors.
Like pepto bismol, alka seltzer or the dozens of faux generic types that you can purchase hundreds of for the price of a roll of the stuff that doesn't spell relief.

I like the idea of perhaps adding a new award in for a Reliever of the Year (althout it'd need to be called something else so we don't have two ROY's), and I think a lot of support for it could be built up on Ideascale.

1) I would want it to REPLACE the current FOY.
2) If you guys like it, post it on ideascale. I just like to rant and ramble on the MBs.

YES. I want this thing to mimic MLB as much as possible. Everything I vote for on ideascale is to support this. It's not what everyone wants, but they all get to vote, too.

I want it to be better than MLB, like no DH, no cheating, no steroids... wait, we have that. Let's continue to make it better than MLB.
Truthfully, I think tyson is missing an advertising opportunity.
We could call this new award the (your company logo here) Shepherd of the Year Award. Out next to the stat line would be the company logo instead of the fireman's hat (like the pepsi circle or a golden arches, etc). Where's the marketing dept on this one?

So, you want the DH in the AL, do nothing commissioners, expanded leagues, career ending injuries, drug suspensions, free agency, multiple minor league levels, blown calls by the umps, all star game winners deciding home field in the WS? How bout knuckleball pitchers? How bout A+/C+ hitters being .350 hitters like Wade Boggs? A+ velocity guys striking out 250-300 batters like clockwork?

I would be in favor of leagues having the option of turning on the DH. There are plenty of people who like it. I don't and wouldn't play in one of those leagues but I support the idea that it can exist within the SD universe.
, do nothing commissioners,
I resemble that remark
expanded leagues,
I have no issue with expanded leagues if the coding can support it. There are other things I'd rather have T code but the expanded leagues is fine with me
career ending injuries
, Yes I am totally behind this one-or rather career altering injuries some of which become career ending because the player just isn't good enough afterwards. More variables is good from my point of view although I know that some disagree. I like System 4 injuries even though there are some who complain about it.
drug suspensions,
this is a minimal part of MLB but if you wanted to code it I'd be OK with it
free agency,
of course. That option is coming and the AML is in 1970 with free agency coming close to being available for other leagues
multiple minor league levels,
I'd totally be on board with that as an option for leagues.
blown calls by the umps,
since you don't watch the games close enough even in dynasty vision you don't know that the umps don't blow a call or two. All you see is the outcome at the end
all star game winners deciding home field in the WS?
Really its a silly system but its as good as any other. It makes as much sense as rotating between leagues and also makes as much sense as best record when two leagues don't play each other. SO however you decide home field is OK with me.
How bout knuckleball pitchers?
sure why would someone be against that?
How bout A+/C+ hitters being .350 hitters like Wade Boggs? OK first off, Boggs is a once in a generation hitter so thinking that ever A+/C+ hitter should be like him is foolish. Secondly, I contend that there is this possibility and I can probably find examples for you although I'm not sure that I would use a rating methodology but rather a results methodology. A+ velocity guys striking out 250-300 batters like clockwork?
I'd be OK with that if they had control to go in with it although I'm not sure I'd want it to be like clockwork but at least possible.
So yeah, I'm in favor of more and more diversity. I see no reason that you have to play in the same kind of league that I want to if you prefer a different feature. And the reverse is also true.

I've not the time, nor desire, to wade through that shtuff.
There are many do nothing commish's. I'm certain you ain't one of them.
I will figure out a way to get my RP formula to MLB muckity mucks and have them put it to committee for a 10 year review. Then, Tyson will have to adopt it once Bud resigns or dies and clear thinking people vote it in.
Don't come kissing up to me after an award gets named after me...

yes, although probably as an option rather than the default setting, since so many people don't like the DH. for myself i think both leagues should adopt the DH in real life too. having pitchers hit is (in my own opinion, i recognize that not everyone agrees) boring and stupid.
do nothing commissioners
we already have do nothing comissioners. the commish in most leagues has no real power to do anything, other than coordinate with admin. in fact, i the thing i found most frustrating about being a league commish is that some owners expected me to act like bowie kuhn and reverse trades and that kind of thing. that's not how it works in SD (and it shouldn't be, since the commish is also a league owner) and it was sometimes difficult to explain that. on the other hand, i'm not sure you could really characterize bud as a 'do-nothing'. he's brought in the wild card, interleague play, realignment, some expansion, home field for the world series from the all-star game, etc. you could certainly call him 'do-stupid' and many would agree with you, but i don't think 'do-nothing' is accurate.
expanded leagues
as a business model for tyson i don't think this is a good idea for the default setting, as it makes it that much more difficult for new players to have a good result. (by which i mean a post-season appearance) however if there are enough people who want to start one and it wouldn't take tyson et al a zillion years to code, then why not?
career ending injuries
i do think this should exist as an option for those who want ultra-realism in their leagues. again though, i don't think it's a good business model for tyson to use this as the default setting, simply because a lot of people are going to get very upset when it happens to their guy.
drug suspensions
i think this would be a waste of time to code, for myself, but i have no real objection to it if the majority of owners would find it interesting or desirable. or again, as an option.
free agency
i think this would be great. my brother is in the AML and says it's a blast. having not been in the league myself though, i don't know how compicated it is. this is probaly (imo) something that should be offered in new higher priced tier of value-added leagues.
multiple minor league levels
i think is a spectacular idea, so long as it doesn't get too complicated in terms of gameplay. i'd think it should be accompanied by variable development with high bust rates, higher injury rates and career-ending injuries though, so as to not result in a huge glut of major-league calibre players.
blown calls by the umps
i don't really see the point, to be honest. it's not going to add any large level of enjoyment to the game for most people, and i think the main result would be for a whole bunch of 'how could the ump blow this call that hurts my team' threads in the way that we get a 'why didn't this guy score from first with two outs' thread fairly regularly now.
all star game winners deciding home field in the WS?
i don't really care how you determine home field in the world series, to be perfectly honest. so long as it goes to my team, of course. otherwise the system is obviously bs.
How bout knuckleball pitchers?
i'd love it. so long as it's not prohibitively hard to code, of course.
How bout A+/C+ hitters being .350 hitters like Wade Boggs?
i've given my opinion of this before in other threads. since the ratings are the same for ALL players (major and minor), my position would be that boggs would have been more of an A+/B hitter. having said that, the existence of extreme outliers like that are hugely difficult to code properly and probably more trouble than they're worth. i mean there's only one wade boggs, and in real life terms everyone appreciates that every player with his tool set isn't going to match his results. but in SD, once one A+/B hitter hits .350 lots of people will think that their A+/B guys should too, and throw a hissy fit when they don't.
A+ velocity guys striking out 250-300 batters like clockwork?
i don't know howoften you mean by clockwork, but it should happen with some degree of regularity, yes. i think it's generally accepted that the strikeout numbers in SD are low.
as i said before, in general i'm in favour of anything that makes the game more realistic that doesn't in turn make the game more difficult for newcomers to pick up or more tedious to play. and even some of those things i'm still in favour of on an on-demand basis. what i'm not in favour of is making changes to formulas that some people think would be 'better' than what already exists in mlb. i think that if mlb has a formula, we should use it.

A note about strikeout numbers, since they have been referenced here. I've looked into the numbers behind this a little bit and have found two interesting statistical points.
A) The top-end SD pitchers perform at a far lower K/9 rate than the top-end MLB pitchers do.
B) The league average K/9 for SD is significantly higher than that of MLB.
This means, to me, that we are operating without sufficient variance in the strikeout category. Perhaps this is because a lot of the strikeouts come from the hitter's contact/power bundle rather than from the pitcher. Perhaps it is because there aren't enough degrees of separation from the best SD pitcher and the league scrubs. I don't really know why, but it is certainly interesting.
