Two reasons:

1) The people who vote on these things are atleast semi-retarded.
2) He won in '02 and in '03. In '02 his range factor was 4.11 with a .970 fielding %. League average that year was 4.00 and .970. In '03 he put up 4.04 and .975. League average was 3.99 and .973. Those numbers are only slightly above average though and wouldn't jump out as gold glove worthy.

Ironically, his best season defensively in the last five years was in '04 when he put up a 4.30 range factor and .983 fielding percentage. League average in those categories were 3.94 and .973, but he did not win the gold glove that year.

Christ, you dug deep for those stats huh? Good work.

I'd like to know how he became way below avg in range all of the sudden then too. They say he had a year long back injury but I think thats a excuse, we'll have to see how he makes out next year

Nah... it wasn't too hard. Baseballreference.com has all that stuff right there so it's pretty easy to find. And it's amazing what you can accomplish when you are putting off doing your homework... Procrastination is a great thing.

Anyway yeah, it's a strange drop off for Renteria. His career average range factor is 4.23 and league average over that period is 3.94. So he's been, at worst, an above average defensive shortstop for most of his career. It looked like he was going in a decline though (with the glove atleast) in his "Gold Glove" seasons, but he had a strong 2004 defensively. His age is listed at 29, but maybe he's alittle bit older than that. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, birth certificates aren't always accurate for foreign players. Alfonso Soriano, for example, aged two years at the time he was traded from the Yankees to the Rangers. Another possibility is that he may have alittle bit more miles on him than most of his peers. I don't know about his work habits, but if he has played winterball for a number of seasons and/or played an abnormally large amount of baseball before making it to the big leagues and the wear and tear is beginning to show. I'm not sure what the baseball climate is like in Columbia but in some Latin American countries (the Dominican Republic for example) talented kids go to rigorous baseball recruiting camps. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how (if) he bounces back next year.

Unlikely. The big contract he got was more a function of the market than his skills.

There was a somewhat common practice in some latin american countries to use false birth certificates for players to allow them to sign a contract by appearing to be younger than they really were.
Before the 2002 season, there was a rash of players who "aged" because the US Immigration became much more stringent in their examination of these players' bona fides and thus "discovered" the true ages of these players.

I would guess that Renteria is the age he says he is.

Thankyou skier for proving the point that I'm too lazy to prove myslef. Those stats showed Jeter was one of the best in the league and it didn't even take into account his good arm.
