Brandon Webb - 5 GS, 5-0, 2.31 ERA, 29 K

Johnn Santana - 4 GS, 2-2, 3.25 ERA, 28 K

interesting to see if that trend keeps up this year...

I credit this thread for showing me just how good Brandon Webb is.

Me too. I believe this will become the Webb vs. Peavy thread as Santana struggles to adjust. Of course the 2 young guns in Cincinnati(Volquez & Cueto) could change this if they develop but they will have to prove theirselves over a few years.

It's still only April and it's a long season.

I was mostly just pointing out that there isn't a clear-sut "best pitcher" and that a lot of other factors come into play.

Still, I'm glad that I could bring Webb into the conversation effectively.

Sunday nights matchup in San Diego (Webb vs. Peavy) should be exciting. I think the +/- on total runs scored is 3.

I'll take the over on that one.

i've got them both in one of my pools, so i'm kind of hoping for the under.

Somebody has to throw a shut out to make the under.

Every time the O's play the M's, I hate the Erik Bedard trade a little more.

Bedard is a monster, but they gave up way too much. And yeah, Bedard is injury prone, but he will throw some good games for you guys.

The Bedard trade wasn't unbalanced, but it was dumb for the Marines because getting Bedard makes them (at best) an 80 win team instead of a 75 win team.

And therein lies the problem with our organizational philosphy.

The Mariners were a .500 team, at best, last year. They outplayed their PECOTA projection and got lucky a lot to win 88, but talent-wise they were no better than an 80-win team.

Now, Bill Bavasi sees the 88-74 record and says "A-ha! We won 88 games, so let's assume we'll do that again next year. Now if we add, say, Carlos Silva, that will give us one or two more. Look! Erik Bedard is an ace veteran! He's been through wars! He will give us another 5 wins! Add that to our 88 from last year, and we'll win the division! Rally Fries for everyone!"

The Mariners also threw a lot of money at mediocre-at-best pitchers that don't strike anyone out - Washburn, Batista, Silver - and traded a quality reliever for a replacement level starter (Horacio Ramirez).

Do not speak of that name again, for it is cursed in these lands.

Webb wins and by a score of 2-1 at that. Never bet against the house. (previous post: over/under at 3)
