my best guess is they had already decided that greene was going to be the #1 guy. that wouldn't sit well for jones, understandably. so given that LT is (presumably) ok being the 3rd down guy, that's a better fit for the jets than jones. also, even if jones is adequate out of the backfield, LT is unarguably the better reciever. so he's the better option as the 3rd down back anyway. combine those two things and the fact that you save a bit of money you can potentially spend elsewhere, and you have a pretty solid decision for the jets. assuming, of course, that the guy they've chosen can actually carry the load as a #1 back.

1) The Broncos got Brady Quinn. I find this deal a bit curious since Orton did pretty well last season and only stands to do better with more time in the system (and more time with his WRs and TEs). But Marshall had been complaining lately (allegedly) and, thus, perhaps the Broncos' brass thought that Quinn would be more appealing to Marshall than Orton has been. Who knows.
2) The Jones/LT2 discussion has neglected to mention Leon Washington. A few weeks ago the Jets coach made the radio rounds and seemed to imply that Jones was expendable because Greene and Washington were set to carry the load. However, Washington has been recovering from an injury. Thus, LT2 is a cheaper insurance policy for Washington than Jones was. Maybe that's why they did it. Either way, it is a bit odd...

Two things:1) The Broncos got Brady Quinn. I find this deal a bit curious since Orton did pretty well last season and only stands to do better with more time in the system (and more time with his WRs and TEs). I doubt that that the Broncos see Brady Quinn as anything more than a back-up with upside down the road, they certainly didn't give up much to get him.

I wonder if locker room dynamics have anything to do with it. As I understand things, Jones is well liked in the locker room, and having him around after his demotion to #2 could be problematic (as well as paying him $3 million + to be the backup). It is much harder to be a disruptive force in the locker room when you are gone.
Second year head coach, second year starting QB, second year starting RB...the Jets are working a plan here, to make this the Rex Ryan/Mark Sanchez show without any distractions. Kerry Rhodes was considered to be a pretty talented safety, but he made waves and you see how quickly he went away.

you splained it, but I still think it's idiotic reasoning on the Jets part. I knew the reasons you gave, already, tr. I was hoping for something I didn't know. I also never said Jones was a great receiver, I merely pointed out that he caught 56 passes once. He's obviously not a terrible receiver out of the backfield.
I'll bet you $100 dynasty Jones outperforms LT for the rest of their careers.

I think your opinion of Kyle Orton is a bit off here. There are a number of back up QBs around the league that are better served for a starting role than he is.

The bottom line, I feel, with Jones was that he was going to cost $5.8 million this year as a backup and the Jets coaching staff and management also sound as though they were worried about how well Jones would handle backing up after a 1,400 yard season.
Cap year/non cap year. New York or anywhere $3 million is a major chunk of change .

He's one of our more promising defensive players. This isn't like shipping out the next Lawrence Taylor (or even the next Elvis Dumervil), but he's a good, young player. Chris Clemons plays the exact same position but much worse and is four years older. It's not losing Tapp that makes me so livid, it's that this is emblematic of the front office's approach to management -- the "monkey slinging feces" approach, specifically.

Otay. This just seems like one of those "let's swap these two underachieving players for each other and see if their new city has less appealing strip clubs to them so they'll stop focusing so much on tits and focus more on football" type trades.

I don't know Tapp all that well but the buzz is he didn't fit the new scheme so getting a body and a 4th round pick doesn't seem that bad to me .

Tapp is 25. His best years are still ahead of him. Chris Clemons will be 30 soon and kinda sucks. You don't trade good, young, cheap talented for older, lesser talent if you're serious about rebuilding.

I understand all that Jon, but this is definitely a "change of scenery" trade.(I'm not sure how much the scenery really changes going from Seattle to Philadelphia. If you really want to give a guy a change of scenery, trade him to the Jazz. All teams with a problematic, underachieving player, no matter what sport, should trade that guy to the Jazz.)

Anyway, I've already eliminated the teams of the AFC West and NFC East, plus the Colts, Patriots and Vikings, from consideration. I'd go with the Saints, but the timing just isn't right there ... too much of a bandwagon move.
