Do you guys think Dwight Gooden is a HOFer? I think he is. If not for a cocaine addiction that derailed his career he would have been a first ballot, easy. But his 197 wins are more than Koufax and both pitchers had primes that lasted for similar brief lengths.

The Dwight Gooden and Sandy Koufax peaks are not even remotely similar. Koufax isn't quite as great as some would have you believe, given the era in which he pitched and the length of his career. But Koufax's average season is better than every season Gooden pitched except for '85. Plus Koufax didn't pitch for the Mets, amirite Tim?[Edited on 2-27-2010 by Tyles]

Come on Pearly, those Patriots weren't that good. Advantage at 2B and RF you can argue other positions but in general the other two OF positions are a wash as is 1B but 3b/SS/C are significantly in the reds camp and its overall much better in Cincinnati

I said ALMOST as good, bart. the diff between bench and edwards is negated by morgan helms. watson was better than may. Staub cedeno wynn was every bit as good as platoon/tolan/rose, especially in the 70's before cedeno got hurt. the Reds advantage is ss-3b, and that's where they win out. Rader was a terrific def 3B, as was metzger at SS.It's a what if argument anyway, but I think the Astros staff would have been a difference, as well.

I mean I know it's a fun thing and picking personal faves is cool, but Parrish and Freehan along with Bob Boone ?
I haven't had the time or energy to do my own team so I shouldn't chirp but the catcher thing just seems odd to me .
Darryl Porter, Mike Scioscia and Tony Pena were Boone contemporaries who I believe were at least as good as Boone and I don't hear much support for them.
Porter was really, really good but his average sucked at a time when that was very important and he just looked weird .

I'd like to compile a list and have a vote among us and see who we come up with for the best team not in the HOF.
I've already conceded Thon as a poor choice, craig. I still think he would have been a HOFer had he not gotten beaned. make your list.
Doran was a good ball player, but Whitaker was better.
tr, I think Freehan is the best, but you named some good catchers. Gene Tenace could be in here, too. Boone caught so many games, it's hard to leave him off. He's very similar to Sundberg.
My list is definitely not definitive.

i looked at simmons when i made my own list. i didn't think he was as good offensively as parrish or as good defensively as boone. munson really had only the 3 stellar years. howard i just gapped on. and porter i always found overrated, personally.

i looked at simmons when i made my own list. i didn't think he was as good offensively as parrish or as good defensively as boone. munson really had only the 3 stellar years. howard i just gapped on. and porter i always found overrated, personally.

You mean, at a time when it was thought to be very important. Batting average is just as worthwhile today as it was 20, 30 and 40 years ago. Same with OBP and SLG. (I think that's what you're getting at, anyway, but, you know, the Santo thing.)

No one has mentioned Rocky Colavito not that I think he could crack the top three in the outfield he's another one of those dime-a-dozen corner outfield guys but he was a solid player plus he has an awesome name. (breath)
