How best to Steal?

September 28, 2008 at 03:25PM View BBCode

I'm not worried about the A- being worse than the A+, I'll roll with that part.

Still, even with prefrences being very specific I find guys running when they have no reason to.

I've set my Preferences to even be weighted 100% to Speed with all guys NOT A being Ultra Conservative, and these lesser guys still go.

What is the best way for me to get JUST the A Speeds running like Demons and everyone else playing it much safer?

I dont know, but going 100% on speed is a bad solution, the guys would try to steal 2nd 3rd and home on every play.

I basically just set the other preferences low enough that my team almost never steals whatsoever.

last year, my team has 72 steals, 22 caught stealings. all stolen bases (and CSes) were by 2 people, who both had A- or better speed.

Here were my manager prefs:
situation: 16
speed: 47
inning: 0
score: 8
catcher arm: 29

for catcher arm it was:

A- Conservative
B- Moderate
C- agressive
D,F - ultra agressive

for speed it was
A- Ultra Agressive
b,c,d,f - ultra conservative

and then some mix of moderate and agressive for situation.

Basically if you only want the A guys to steal, set A speed to "ultra agressive" and set all the other speeds to "ultra conservative". then the variance is high. In order to avoid having your A speed guys steal too much, just make the other things (catcher arm, etc) a little bit lower than you would normally put them (like say "conservative" instead of "moderate" or whatever). then when it all adds up, the A guys wont steal all the time despite the ultra agressive rating, but the B,c,d, and f guys will never ever steal.

very good response Happy, and I agree. The only thing I don't agree with is this....

the guys would try to steal 2nd 3rd and home on every play.

you will never see a player attempt to steal home, no matter what your prefs say.

Stealing is broken, just avoid it when possible.

TR, my roster is horrid. If I don't steal I have even less a chance to win.

I agree, it's broken... but it's the only tool I got. So a Shovel with not handle is better than no Shovel at all.

I feel your pain Brex but the problem is that with the inconsistency of the game engine on stealing it just isn't a reliable weapon.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/depth.jsp?teamid=34319]This[/url] is the fastest of my teams, 7 of 8 regulars are red lettered in speed yet we still barely achieve break even levels on steals (72.4% last season) because ABE won't let me differentiate between A-, A and A+ speed.

We've beaten this horse into the ground and I've never heard one response from Admin, so I have to assume nothing is going to change.

I know, which is sad. If you can't really use your speed, then only Contact and Power matter. That limits things alot.

yeah, stealing is just going to bury your team, not give them hope.

and i havent looked closely enough to know whether or not stealing home ever happens, i just always throw it on super conservative and forget about it.

But yeah, the problem is that A- speed players are actually less valuble than B or B+ speed players. preferably you have A+ speed, and no A and no A-.

50/50 speed and catcher's arm.

Speed:

A - Ultra Aggressive
B - Aggressive
C - Ultra Conservative
D - Ultra Conservative
F - Ultra Conservative

Catcher's Arm:

A - Ultra Conservative
B - Conservative
C - Ultra Aggressive
D - Ultra Aggressive
F - Ultra Aggressive

My 3 leagues have (SB/CS) 75/15, 12/0 and 51/5, so a steal success range of 83% to 100%.

you steal with the B guys? Hmm. looks pretty good, but of course not taking situation into account is a bad deal imo. 75% is a nice rule of thumb, but the situation changes the value.

(probably still works out better than mine. im going to use yours as a base and then maybe put in 10-15 pionts for situation and such)

Regardless of how you set it up the discrepancies are still glaring:

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?playername=nobody&mode=stats&id=4024192]Charlie Wade[/url] is 5 points into A+ speed yet is 11/19 this season while [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=4024210&statsorimps=stats]Fred Meyers[/url], three points into A- is 11/13 with the same preferences.

Yeah, yeah small samples but the results are maddening.

well thats just bad luck. the A- and A+ guys are going at the same time, its the A- guy going too much that is normally the problem.

the actual formula might work like this, im not sure, but what i do to measure stealing aggressiveness, i assign 90 points to ultra aggressive, 70 to aggressive, 50 to moderate, 30 to conservative and 10 to ultra conservative, then you multiply this by your weights on speed/arm etc to get the total aggressiveness on the scale of 100.

for example if my preferences are:

situation: 20
speed: 40
arm: 40

Situation: aggressive

A speed: aggressive
B speed: moderate

A arm: ultra conservative
B arm: moderate

70(aggressive) * .20(situation) = 14
70(aggressive) * .40(A speed) = 28
50(moderate) * .40(B speed) = 20
30(conservative) *40(A arm) = 12
50(moderate) *.40(B arm) = 20

A speed/A arm catcher = 14+28+12 = 54 total
A speed/B arm catcher = 14+28+20 = 62
B speed/A arm catcher = 14+20+12 = 46
B speed/B arm catcher = 14+20+20 = 54

Once you know this exact agressiveness number, its easier to adjust your settings to figure out whats working and whats not to get the perfect balance.

I weigh my prefs 60 Speed, 40 Catcher's Arm. My A guys are ultra-aggressive, everyone else is ultra-conservative.

Numbers so far on my OGL team: 34 SB, 10 CS (77.2%)

MSL: 138 SB, 83 CS (62.4%) It should be noted that my CS numbers are slightly inflated by one [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?playername=nobody&mode=stats&id=4297539]Dave Ellis[/url], a former speed demon in the twilight of his career. I've had several A+ guys in their prime on this team, so I turned them loose. Now most of them are declining and the stealing percentage went down with it.

HCL: 41 SB, 5 CS (89.1%)

FVL: 88 SB, 29 CS (75.2%)
