the phillies signed cliff lee. halladay-lee-oswalt-hamels. do they even bother with a 5th starter?(somewhere bart is dancing)

ha. i felt like the phillies were hatching something big all along. i thought it would be with a hitter, but this is awesomes enough.

their lineup is much better than what the giants fielded lasy year and the rotation is better.

Wow. For the next season or two this will (probably) be the most dominant pitching staff that I've ever seen. (I'm too young to remember the Orioles back in the day.)

they proably add a hitter. maybe beltre? or a trade, more likely. phillies are good at trading for stuff.

In all honesty I never thought he was going to New York, I don't think he wanted the whole NY pressure cooker thing. Now in Philly he gets $24 million a year and doesn't even have to be the #1 .
That's one hell of a rotation .

C'mon people the guy got a 5 year deal at an average of $24 million per year, plus a vesting option, it's not like he signed for the league minimum .

i think jeter wanted a lot of money, because he looked at AJ Burnette and said, wow, if that thing is getting paid, then i really need to get paid.

Less guaranteed total dollars, yes, but more per year. If he stays productive, reaches the vesting options, and makes something like $10 million/year in his next deal, he'll make more.

the vesting options give him some more, yes, but not $150 million. which would mean he'll have taken less money. and assumed more risk in the bargain, since there's no knowing right now what his health/effectiveness will be like after his philly contract is up.

Rumours are NY offered $138 over 6 years plus a $15 vesting option which would be $153 over 7 years, other rumours (AP) have them at $148 guaranteed over 7 years .
Texas was supposed to be around $150 million for 7 years with some money deferred .
Bottom line is Lee may miss out on some dollars if he craps out in 2014-15 but he may end up making as much in six years as NY offered in seven. He didn't leave a whole lot, if anything, on the table and notions to the contrary are silly .
