A Pet Peeve

I know I have no influence over how anyone enjoys the game, but renaming players after Hall of Famers, when the player's skill set doesn't seem to match the Hall-of-Famers' stats, kind of irks me.

(Plus Willie Mays and Ken Griffey Jr happen to be my favorite players ever. I'd hope anything renamed after either of them would put up Hall-of-Fame level, career power numbers.)

I hope you're not referring to Robin Roberts who is certainly an A level pitcher.

I agree with Rogue, and even if the skill set matches me its annoying

Well, considering I linked to exactly which player I was referring...then linked to Willie Mays' career stats...then referenced Willie Mays as one of my two favorite players of all time...you can feel pretty comfortable that it was not Robin Roberts. ;)

Willie Mays is my all time favorite athlete hands down. I started following his career in 1958, when I was five and the Giants moved to San Francisco.
I was fortunate to see him play many times as a Giant and at 80 years old, probably the greatest living player.

In the year we are starting-1950, Mays was still in the minors and would not make his major league debut until the following season, and played in the World Series as a rookie.

However, I will change the player's name to Willie Dixon. Any relationship to the blues singer/composer is strictly a coincidence.

The use of actual players names has some detractors. I have rarely done it in the past and won't do it now if it annoys other owners.

myself, i don't like the real player names, generally for the reason rouge said. i once played in a league where a guy named a D+/C+ C-/B- 22 year old OF Mickey Mantle. i'm the farthest thing from a yankees fan, but that's just sacrilege. having said that, i'm not about to impose my own value system on someone else's team. i would prefer that real (baseball) player names not be used but if that's how someone else enjoys the game, so be it.

I don't care what anybody names their players. I rarely if ever change a player name mainly because of the lack of importance to me and I'm too lazy to do it, but unless the league rules prevent it, I think you can name your players whatever you want.

Usually I don't rename but had a couple of minutes yesterday and renamed for a couple of the whiz kids.

I like renames and don't even mind people using real MLB players names (again, you pay your money...you should do whatever makes the game fun for you, as long as it doesn't greatly degrade everyone else's experience). It's my preference that for the truly great historical players, the talent level of the sim players be at least somewhat representative (i.e. no Rickey Henderson's that are C+ contact, A+ power, B- speed players) of their MLB namesakes.

(Of course, I have begun using "near names" like Ken Griffith, Jr... William Hayes, or Reginald Jackstone, in some of my leagues...but I'm just odd like that.)

I am also not against nicknames and tend to go for the silly.

For real player nicknames Bart, I am sorry, Cormier better suck, and Kaat better pitch till he's 62. :)

Cormier certainly isn't that bad Geoff. He had a 4.03 ERA over 1200+ innings but had some wild fluctuations in ERA year to year there.

i sort of remember him as the brett saberhagen of lefty relievers.

He pitched here, nothing to write home about, course he was an SP

i do remember Cormier being bad in Montreal or whenever anyone tried to make him a starter but he was a pretty good reliever from what I remember

I just noticed that Carlos Delgado has great speed and poor on-base skills. LOL

And, of course, he's playing in Pittsburgh . Delgado never got the respect he deserved in MLB, IMO, so why should the SIM treat him any better.

Indeed he could. As a hitter, Delgado was the truth. And to think, he started out as a catcher.

yes a catcher and then an outfielder. i think he was a better catcher than outfielder too

To his credit though he worked hard at becoming an adequate first baseman
