Hidden bids?

December 18, 2011 at 12:04AM View BBCode

I have no idea if there would be support for this but I'd love to hear others thoughts on making bids private. I think it would be a good idea since it makes no sense that all other owners would know what everyone is bidding.

Or maybe as an alternative to make it more "realistic" only show the HIGHEST bid a player has received (since any team trying to sign him would likely be told he'd have to beat that).

Just throwing it out there, I just don't really understand why we get to see what everyone else is offering players. Might help solve the "premium offer" situation as well since if someone has way overbid on a player all he would know is that he has the top bid, not that he has it by $4m and would thus be less likely to reduce it in future days.

In the beginning of salary leagues things were not automated. Everyone sent their bids to a specific account and then at the end of the day they were posted. The reason they were posted was because it was deemed unfair for a few owners to have access to the information and not all owners.

When the automation was put into effect the tradition of all owners seeing all bids was continued.

I don't think it has to be that way if we don't want it to be.

I still like the idea of only being able to see the bidding on players you have bid on .

I agree, I think you should only be able to see your own bids. I could also case for seeing just the top bid though, since I would imagine most agents will let another team know what kind of offer their client is currently considering and what it will take to sign him.

Another option (and maybe this is getting too in-depth) is to be able to see your own offers and the top bid on YOUR free agents. This would also sort-of address the issue of "matching offers" we've been talking about since you'd know what you'll need to resign the player.

i understand the rationale for that but i have to say that i like bo's idea of only seeing the top bid better. in real life terms any FA that i contacted would be only too happy to tell me what offer i had to beat. i don't think that any real life FA would refuse to tell me what his best offer was though.

I like it as it is now. I think bids being private would greatly decrease bidding strategy and make it pretty much bid and pray. Just showing the top bid would be a better idea but i think it would still be a bit of a decrease in strategy.

Also wouldnt just placing .50 bids on everyone(which would be pretty annoying) pretty much counteract the idea behind only being able to see the bidding of players you've bid on? I think the only difference it would make is for marginal bench players since you obviously cant afford to sign 100 dudes at .50. So they'd basically be the only bids to remain blind for the most part.

I think when roosters and I say you can only see the bidding on players you've bid on, it means only your actual bid as a way to keep track, not all the bids on that player (that's what I meant at least). I do think just seeing top bids for everyone makes more sense and is more realistic and would be an advocate for that change.

I would actually argue that it would increase strategy because you won't be able to just throw out bids and then adjust based on the market rate. You have to do a bit of homework and see what that type of player goes for and what other teams might be in the market for him.

Just my 2 cents. I really just don't like how we are omniscient during the FA period. I think knowing the top bid and maybe the # of bids on a player is the most info we should get since that is likely what an agent would tell a GM who inquired. "Look, if you want to sign my client you should know that we already have offers from 6 other teams and you'll have to beat 4 years at $6m/yr if you want to be considered".
