ZETA kicker pool

January 07, 2013 at 05:56PM View BBCode

As of now there are 9 K/P on the WW. There are 13 in the draft pool. All are below average. I have one on my team (65 overall).

Its possible that some inactive teams are hoarding them.

My idea is for the player creator engine to use the WW to help decide how many at each position are created.

The WW is a good indication as to what is needed in the league. For example, there are 9 DE on the wire. There are 60 DTs.

The draft pool created 40 DTs and 27 DEs

We could add 48 (96 Zeta) to the draft position of all K/P, starting their draft in the 4th round. This might cure absentee hoarding and throw K/P in with QB, FB, which are often low in the draft and moved up according to need/desperation.

For Dt, half the yearly pool and throw away the bottom half. The general shape/strength of Dt is good.

This yr in the EFL draft there are: 28 Dt; 18 Kr, (16 unusable); 4 Ilb; 4 P;
3 K; 3 Fb.
There are 2 quality Kr in this draft. :o It seems like there is only 1 usable Kr every other draft.

I mostly agree with you but I see a problem: the lack of a certain position in the draft/WW becomes an issue only if it's repeated through the seasons. Otherwise it's just a bad year (or a couple, or three years) for a certain position. Strength must be evenly distributed in the pool, of course, but not to the point where EVERYONE can find a starter at every position deep in the draft every single year. For kickers it's different, because every NFL team has at least one guy capable of doing it. But other positions have to have their generational highs and lows. I see this already happening in the leagues I'm in: you have the great year for guards and the crappy year(s) for centers, while WRs, HBs, DBs and LBs are usually abundant. The occasional issue is when you have 7 seasons between one single usable QB or kicker and the other, and abandoned teams gather them all anyway.

The engine could create freshman based on the supply and demand of the WW. You would see the benefits in 4 years.

Part of the problem is that we got used to K's and P's being a talent-rich position that no one had to care about... in fact most people set their draft preferences to not even draft them knowing they could always get a decent one on the wire.

So the talent level was reduced, and now there are only about 5-10 red-letter kickers or punters in a league at any one time. Which is probably how it should be.

But I do think it's possible that kickers or punters are retiring too easily/early, so I will look at that. I think we may lose a lot of high-blue letter players that way.

Minor problem not worth fixing;

I tried to look at previous year drafts. I can only see 1978. The year drop down box isn't working for me. It works on other years until I try to sort the draft and it takes me to 1978 sorted.

The DE shortage has been going on forever, the punter/kicker thing is really silly because, as we all know, in real life there are dozens of free agent punters and kickers just hanging out waiting for the call yet in the EFL there are only 20 punters total in the league for 16 teams.

I am making adjustments now in the retirement code to keep older K's and P's from retiring prematurely.

In BETA there are 69 DE's. There are 231 DT's.

In ZETA (32 teams) 141 DE's and 306 DT's.

In EDFL - 88 DE's & 214 DT's.

IN JBFL - 94 DE's & 225 DT's.

In WPFL- 82 DE's & 232 DT's.

Those are the leagues that I belong to but it looks like a site wide issue.

In the real world DTs are from time to time able to sub at DE, while you rarely see the opposite. At the same time, quite a few big LBs have sort of a "double life" between OLB and DE. It could be just an impression, but in this game I often see the same thing. Of course this is not necessarily a solution to the extreme ratios you pointed out, but it could be part of the reason.
